Justin Lum
Associate Director

Mr. Lum is a San Antonio native and a proud graduate of Texas Tech University, where he earned his Bachelor of Science in Music Education with a concentration in Clarinet in 2021. During his time at Texas Tech, Mr. Lum was an active member of the Goin' Band from Raiderland and performed with a wide variety of premier ensembles, including the Symphonic Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, Matador Singers Men’s Choir, and numerous chamber groups including woodwind quintets and clarinet choirs. He had the privilege of studying under the guidance of Dr. David Shea (Clarinet), Dr. Sarah McKoin, Dr. Eric Allen, and Dr. Joel Pagán. In recognition of his outstanding contributions and leadership, Mr. Lum was honored with the TMEA Collegiate Music Educators Award in 2021.
He joins the Pieper Band of Warriors after serving as the Assistant Band Director at John Jay High School in Northside ISD from 2022 to 2026. While at John Jay, Mr. Lum directed both marching and concert ensembles to consistent Superior ratings at UIL evaluations, led the marching band's visual program, and oversaw the entire woodwind curriculum. As an advocate of jazz education, Mr. Lum also successfully reestablished the John Jay Jazz Studies program, leading the ensemble to multiple top-place finishes at regional jazz festivals across San Antonio.
Mr. Lum is deeply passionate about helping every student discover their potential through music while fostering a positive, inclusive, and challenging learning environment. Returning to Pieper is a special honor for him; he previously served as the program's long-term substitute in the spring of 2022, where he had the privilege of helping the Band of Warriors earn the very first UIL Concert & Sight-Reading Sweepstakes in school history.
When he is not in the band hall, Mr. Lum is an active member of the San Antonio Wind Symphony and enjoys attending live concerts, hunting for vintage vinyl records, hitting the bowling lanes, and spending time with his Siberian Husky, Ringo.
